GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 14, 2023) - Following a rare weekend off from behind the wheel of the Buffalo Wild Wings / Lunstra Motorsports No. 13, Mark Dobmeier has a chance to wrap up his eighth points title at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks on Friday night as he will begin the night with a 17-point lead in the season long standings at the high-banked quarter-mile bullring. Dobmeier's most recent races also came with championship implications attached to them two weeks ago at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, SD where Dobmeier was in contention the entire weekend for his seventh championship at that high-banked bullring. Dobmeier fell just short of the title there, finishing his summer there 19 points back of two-time champion Brooke Tatnell.
With Friday's event also serving as track championship night for the division at River Cities, Dobmeier, by way of leading the standings heading into the night, will start on the pole of his heat race. Dobmeier, who won the season opener at the Speedway on May 19th, remained dominant at the speedway all season, winning four features, and not finishing worse than 4th in the eight points races held at the track during the 2023 campaign. As mentioned, should Dobmeier remain as solid as he has been all season through the final feature of the season, Dobmeier would win his eighth track title. His first at the speedway came in 2003, which was his first of five in-a-row, and six titles in seven years, a streak that lasted until 2009. Dobmeier won last season's title on the final lap, passing Jade Hastings at the drop of the checkers in a race where whichever driver won the race would also win the points title. Dobmeier won the race by .049 seconds, the second closest Sprint Car finish in track history since electronic timing and scoring was introduced in 2006. In other close points battles won by Dobmeier at the speedway, Dobmeier's first title was won by just eight points over Brad Pake in 2003, and by 18 over Pake again in 2004. Dobmeier, who won again by 18 markers in 2005 over Dave Sobczak, won the 2009 title by just two points over Bobby Martin and four markers over Wade Nygaard.
